Noah's Ark Potbellied Pig Sanctuary |
How It All Started When the Pot Belly Pig craze came around I wanted one but could not afford the exuberant prices. I waited. When I finally got one I did not educate myself first. Although I raised Sir Percival who is a Florida Feral, pot belly pigs are different. My first pot belly was a tiny 6 day old which was to be another adventure. I was told she would only be 45 pounds. She became 300 pounds. She was very aggressive. I understand now after contacting many people how important it is to educate yourself, not only to pot belly pigs but to any animal you get. With the help of some pot belly pig people, Scarlett and I have worked out our problems. Scarlett passed away very unexpected on April 8th of 2008 at the age of 15 years. Then I was asked in 1997 to start a rescue. I was hesitant because owning two pigs did not make me educated in knowing what to do with owning and setting up a rescue. I did give it a try and here I am 11 1/2 years later. Owning the sanctuary, becoming a 501 (c) (3) Working for a vet clinic and finishing my Vet Tech course and now to the present with 120 pigs . I do educational work with having schools have me there for little mini seminars teaching children how special animals are including the pot belly pigs. We also do Kiss A Pig functions at schools where the children have read a required number of books and have asked that their Principal of the school Kiss A Pig......they are fun events and helps children understand about a pig. Animals cannot speak for themselves. We have to speak for them. Many of the pigs who came here were abused, abandoned and dumped. You can sit with them and see a lot in their eyes of what they have been through. You can see the love.......the fear and the fear is what we work on so they know they will never be thrown out or hungry again. I am able to do rescue with the help of a lot of wonderful people out there. It takes a lot of time and a lot of money. I can no longer work at this time because of some medical problems. I do hope to go back to work at some point so right now I depend on a lot of volunteers and donations to keep going. We also have a sponsorship program in which a person can sponsor a pig and get a picture of their pig, visit if they live close enough and get updates on their special pig. I am no longer taking in any pigs because all my barns are full and I do not want to risk not being able to take care of the ones I have by taking in more. I also am not adopting out anymore due to the fact that I got 27 pigs back from people who adopted them from last year and this year. So the adventure continues . . . . . .
